Ephesians 1:3 "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,In the introduction for this verse, you read about some of the tests, trials and afflictions people throughout the world have to endure. Do things go wrong in our lives? At some point we are tested, get aches and pains or something may happen outside what we think the norm in our life is. How should we respond? How do we respond?
God gave Paul direct warnings not to go to Jerusalem. Paul’s response was packing his bags and catching the next boat out. He thought he could make a difference; he did make a difference in prison. He decided himself to do this. You see God has to reveal to us who we are before we can see who and what He is. For all the things Paul did for Christ, he, like us, was still a sinful man. Now in prison for not heading the warnings he was ready to receive revelation from God.
GRACE=PEACEPaul begins his letter to the Ephesians this greeting from God.
Eph. 1:2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Grace is all the blessings and benefits God gives because of the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross. Grace brings peace. When we respond to Gods grace it brings with it peace. It is not peace with God, which we already have, but he is offering to the Ephesians and us by application, a renewal of the peace of God by responding to Grace.
Romans 5:1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.Whatever trial, difficulty, affliction, or distractions we deal with; if we respond to Gods grace, we will have peace.
Phil. 4:7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Eph. 1:3 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ”Paul is making a factual statement in that God is the source of all blessings. God is blessed and is the supplier of all true blessings. He not only is making a statement of fact but is also urging the Ephesians and us to bless God. When we bless God, we do nothing but give Him thanks. David was all over blessing God in
Psalms 103. Paul in a prison, shackled to a guard is rejoicing in the blessings that cannot be changed because of human failures and realizes that the benefits all believers have are assured by spiritual blessings in the heavenly places and in Christ. With Jesus Christ, you already have everything you need.
Grace = Peace. Think for a minute about our prayer life, they tend to be more on the selfish side. That may be why they aren't answered. We may pray for help with this, provide for that, to do something for, or to change something but the fact is that we don’t need any other blessings.
Isaiah 30:18 Therefore the Lord long s to be gracious to you, And therefore He wait s on high to have compassion on you.
For the Lord is a God of justice; How blessed are all those who long for Him. God is tapping His foot in expectation, waiting for us to call to Him for our blessings.
“with every spiritual blessing”Every, meaning that each individual, single, or all spiritual blessings in Christ. We receive all spiritual blessings from God. When we accept Jesus Christ by Grace and have eternal life.
Eph. 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God. We all have the same resources from God as believers and receive the same blessings. No more and no less. What about the Apostle Paul? Apostleship was a spiritual gift, we all have different spiritual gifts but it doesn’t change our resources. That person seems to have more than this person does. The difference is that one may be claiming his resources and the other may not be. Every believer has equal assets and opportunities to utilize the resources; it is up to you to access them. The times of opportunity for us to use the blessings God gives are when we go through trials, temptation, or need of direction.
“in the heavenly places”All our blessings are in a storehouse, if you will, in heaven. They can’t be taken, touched or changed in or at any time. Satan or as he is called in
Eph. 2:2 “the prince of the power of the air” or
2 Cor. 4:4 “the god of this world” is always in the shadows waiting. He can’t take any of your blessings but he can keep you from using them by distracting you from them. When we ache, or have pains, or hurt physically does this give reason not to call on God for spiritual strengthening. If our souls are healthy, he can make the body healthy if he wants it healthy but if he does not it for reason, so that his greatness will be shown through our weakness. Paul learned this in
2 Cor 12:9-10 (paraphrased) “I am content in my weaknesses, insults, distress, persecution, and difficulties". God told him,
“My Grace is sufficient for you”. Paul’s response
“for when I am weak, then I am strong”. Do you now see how it works? I saw this with my own eyes in Dave Whisenant who throughout his life suffered certain physicality’s and Chuck Farmer, once told he would not last a month by doctors, both would until their last breaths continue to call to the heavenly places for their blessings from God and be great warriors for Christ. They took up the full armor of God (
Eph. 6:13) and didn’t let Satan distract them from using their resources in the heavenly places.
“ in Christ”Once we accept, without a shadow of doubt, the work that Jesus Christ did for us on the cross over 2000 years ago, that he was buried, and raised from the dead, and ascended to be by God our Father in heaven then we are in union with Him. In Christ, all our transgressions have been take care of.
Colossians 2:13 When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions,. We are children of God, brethren, beloved, saints, righteous, and more. These are just a few of many things we obtain when we are in Christ. In Him we have peace and our blessings are secured as well as our eternal salvation.
GRACE=PEACEPaul, as much as he did for Christ’s sake he was just like us. At times we are shown right and wrong, we take it upon ourselves to answer some of these things that happen in our lives instead of going to where the answer can be found. He learned the lesson with Devine discipline as we learn now through the letter of Paul to the Ephesians. Now, I hope and as Paul wrote for us to apply to our lives, the need in giving thanks to God for blessing us with every individual spiritual blessing and to call up to heaven to access those blessings for every individual need for the peace God wants for us in our lives.
