Spiritual Gifts III
1 Peter 4:10-11 “ As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. Whoever speaks, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever * serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen”
We have been going over five steps to Identifying Your Spiritual Gift. The first step was: Know that you have a Spiritual gift. The second step was: Continually Walk by the Spirit. Today we will go over the third step to identifying your Spiritual gift.
Step 3: Study the Word of God
In order to identify your Spiritual gift you must gain an intelligent understanding of what the Bible specifically says about the Spiritual Gifts. There is no substitute for a deep self study on the Bible’s teaching about Spiritual gifts. Because Spiritual Gifts are dividing the Body instead of their indented purpose, to unify it, I will only list the nine spiritual gifts that most churches agree on. If I leave out a gift that you may think that you have, please leave a comment or email me and we can discuss it in detail.
Two types of gifts: Speaking and Service
1 Peter 4:11 “Whoever SPEAKS, is to do so as one who is speaking the utterances of God; whoever SERVES is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies;”
Speaking gifts
Eph 4:11-13 “ And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the EQUIPPING of the saints for the work of service, to the BUILDING UP of the body of Christ; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.”
From this passage of Scripture we are told of the Speaking Gifts. Two of these gifts are still active in the church today.
Pastor-teacher - a supernatural ability to lead and teach believers whereas the end result is spiritual growth leading to maturity. This includes the ability to study and understand the doctrines of the Bible, to organize them, and then teach in a way that is most understandable to the hearer.
Evangelist- A supernatural ability to communicate the gospel, the message of salvation through Jesus Christ, to unbelievers.
Service Gifts
Romans 12:6-8 “ Since we have GIFTS that differ according to the grace given to us, each of us is to exercise THEM accordingly: if prophecy, according to the proportion of his faith; if service, in his serving; or he who teaches, in his teaching, or he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who gives, with liberality; he who leads, with diligence; he who shows mercy, with cheerfulness.”
1 Corinthians 12:28 “And God has appointed in the church, first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, various kinds of tongues.”
From this passage of Scripture we are told of the Serving Gifts. Seven of these gifts are still active in the church today.
Helps - a supernatural ability to help out and lend support to any work, activity, and ministry inside and outside the church. Also lend support to other believers in the function of their gifts.
Mercy - a supernatural ability to sympathize with others undergoing intense suffering, and to provide just the right physical support or words of encouragement to help alleviate their suffering.
Exhortation - A supernatural ability to encourage, support, console, through conversation and through the word of God with others who are need of such support. Also is able to detect those in need of such support.
Leadership - a supernatural ability to provide leadership and influence people to work together to accomplish goals within the church.
Giving - a supernatural ability and desire to give material support to those in need. God tends to give these believers much in order to pass it along.
Serving in ministry- the supernatural ability to organize, participate in, implement spiritual gifts in, and see completion in any and possibly every ministry of the church.
Administration - the supernatural ability to understand and put into action the things that directs the progress of the church. (Logistics, finances, organization, structure, church business)
You will never know what Spiritual gift you have been given if you don’t have an understanding of permanent Spiritual gifts. I advise you to do as much personal study as you can on these gifts. If you have any questions or complaints please leave a comment or email me. Tomorrow we will look at step four.
